McMahon and the “Fearsome Four”

There’s no snappy nickname for the Rhinos’ defense like “Fearsome Foursome.” The players who’ve protected the goal better than any unit for Rochester in 17 years are more like a melting pot that makes scoring chances disappear.

The Rhinos rank last in the 24-team USL in saves per game (2.42), a statistic that speaks volumes about how strong its back four has played.

“They have good talent, good size and collectively we have some pretty bright guys back there. They know how to play,” said head coach Bob Lilley, whose USL Eastern Conference regular-season champions host the New York Red Bulls II on Saturday night. “They’ve been very, very good.”

The newcomers have combined with returnees and outside backs Pat McMahon, 28, and England native Onua Obasi, 26, to form a physical, sizable and savvy unit. Sean Totsch, 24, also has been Johnny on the spot, filling in where needed. He’s an Illinois native like McMahon.

At 5 feet 11, the gritty McMahon is the smallest but he plays bigger. Every other defender is 6-2 or taller.
